As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to use image sequences as output format (.exr, .tif, etc) instead of animation video format (.avi, .mov, etc).

On the Ranch we also recommend to use image sequences as input format if you need to use a video as a texture. We consider image sequences safer as no system dependent codec is involved.
